How to Use the Word Counter

Paste or type your text into the large text area above. As you type, all statistics update in real time. You will see counts for words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, and paragraphs. The tool also calculates the average word length, estimated reading time, and estimated speaking time.

This word counter is useful for writers tracking document length, students meeting assignment requirements, social media managers checking character limits, and anyone who needs quick text statistics. The reading and speaking time estimates help you plan presentations, speeches, or gauge how long a blog post will take to read.

Sentence counting looks for sentence-ending punctuation marks (periods, exclamation points, question marks). Paragraph counting splits on blank lines. These methods work well for standard English prose. For best results with other languages or specialized formatting, consider the counts as close approximations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are words counted?

Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, line breaks). Consecutive whitespace is treated as a single delimiter. Empty input returns zero words.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time is estimated based on an average reading speed of 225 words per minute, which is the commonly accepted average for adult readers of English text.

How is speaking time estimated?

Speaking time is based on an average speaking pace of 150 words per minute, which is the standard rate for presentations and public speaking.

Does the character count include spaces?

Both counts are shown. 'Characters' includes all characters (letters, spaces, punctuation). 'Characters (no spaces)' excludes all whitespace characters.

How are paragraphs counted?

Paragraphs are counted by splitting text on blank lines (two or more consecutive line breaks). A single block of text with no blank lines counts as one paragraph.
