In the United States, the standard tip for restaurant service is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill. For excellent service, 20% to 25% is common. For counter service or takeout, 10% or a flat dollar amount is typical.

Etiquette experts generally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since the tax goes to the government and not to the service. However, tipping on the total including tax is also common and makes the math simpler.

For food delivery, 15% to 20% is standard, with a minimum of $3 to $5 depending on the order size and distance. In poor weather or for large orders, consider tipping on the higher end.

In countries where tipping is customary (like the US), leaving no tip is generally considered inappropriate unless the service was truly unacceptable. If you had a bad experience, consider speaking with a manager rather than withholding the tip entirely, as servers often depend on tips as a significant portion of their income.
