How to Use the Discount Calculator

Enter the original price of the item and the discount percentage to instantly see the discount amount, final price, and how much you save. If a store offers multiple discounts (such as a sale plus a coupon), click "Add Another Discount" to stack additional percentage discounts on top of each other.

The visual price breakdown bar shows you exactly how the original price is divided between what you pay and what you save at each discount level. This makes it easy to understand the impact of each discount and compare different discount combinations.

Smart Shopping with Discount Calculations

Understanding how discounts work can save you money. Many stores offer stacked promotions like "20% off everything plus an extra 15% with this coupon." Shoppers often assume this means 35% off, but the actual savings are less because each discount applies to the already-reduced price. Use this calculator to see the true final price before you buy, and compare whether a single larger discount or multiple smaller stacked discounts gives you a better deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do stacked discounts work?

Stacked discounts are applied sequentially, not added together. For example, a 20% discount followed by a 10% discount on a $100 item gives you $100 * 0.80 = $80, then $80 * 0.90 = $72. This is different from a single 30% discount, which would give $70.

Is a 20% + 10% discount the same as 30% off?

No. When discounts are stacked, each percentage is applied to the already-reduced price, not the original. A 20% + 10% stacked discount results in a total savings of 28%, not 30%. The order of the discounts does not matter mathematically.

How do I calculate the discount amount from a sale price?

Enter the original price and adjust the discount percentage until the final price matches the sale price you see. Alternatively, you can calculate it manually: Discount % = ((Original Price - Sale Price) / Original Price) * 100.

Can I add more than two discounts?

Yes! Click the 'Add Another Discount' button to stack as many discount levels as you need. Each discount is applied sequentially to the price remaining after all previous discounts.

Does this include sales tax?

This calculator shows the price after discounts only. Sales tax varies by location and is typically applied after all discounts. To estimate your total with tax, multiply the final discounted price by (1 + your tax rate as a decimal).
